Background of the Study

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a major public health issue globally, contributing significantly to the burden of cardiovascular diseases (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). In Nigeria, hypertension is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and its prevalence is rising at an alarming rate. While several factors contribute to the development of hypertension, smoking and alcohol consumption are known to be significant risk factors that exacerbate the condition. Smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases by promoting the buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, raising blood pressure, and causing a decrease in the ability of the blood vessels to relax properly (Chowdhury et al., 2023). Alcohol consumption, on the other hand, contributes to hypertension by inducing various physiological changes such as increasing the release of certain hormones that elevate blood pressure (Smith et al., 2024).

Jigawa State, located in the northern region of Nigeria, has witnessed an increase in lifestyle-related diseases, with hypertension becoming a growing concern (Nigerian Heart Foundation, 2023). Despite the rising rates of hypertension in the state, there is limited research that directly connects smoking and alcohol consumption with the prevalence of hypertension. Understanding the interplay of these risk factors in the context of Jigawa State is crucial to formulating effective prevention and management strategies. This study aims to examine the association between smoking, alcohol consumption, and the development of hypertension in Jigawa State, focusing on the health behaviors of the population and their contribution to hypertension risk.

The findings of this research can help inform public health initiatives in the state, including educational campaigns, lifestyle interventions, and policy development aimed at reducing smoking and alcohol-related hypertension risks. Moreover, the research will add to the existing literature on hypertension risk factors in Nigeria, offering valuable insights that can be used to guide national strategies for combating hypertension. The study will focus on adults aged 18 years and above in Jigawa State, as they represent the primary demographic at risk for hypertension. The outcomes could also assist healthcare professionals in diagnosing and managing hypertension more effectively in this region.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing concern regarding hypertension in Nigeria, there is limited empirical data that specifically explores the role of smoking and alcohol consumption as risk factors for hypertension in Jigawa State. The state, like many other regions in Nigeria, faces significant public health challenges, including a high prevalence of smoking and alcohol use, which may contribute to the increasing rates of hypertension. While national surveys provide some insight into hypertension trends, region-specific data are essential for tailored interventions and accurate health planning (Nigerian Heart Foundation, 2023). It is not yet clear how smoking and alcohol consumption interact with other socio-economic and cultural factors in influencing hypertension in Jigawa State.

This lack of context-specific research makes it difficult for policymakers and healthcare providers to implement targeted programs aimed at reducing hypertension risk factors. Additionally, hypertension often goes undiagnosed and untreated in many communities due to limited access to healthcare, and when coupled with smoking and alcohol use, the risk of complications such as stroke and heart failure increases (Chowdhury et al., 2023). Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap by assessing how smoking and alcohol consumption contribute to hypertension prevalence in Jigawa State, providing evidence-based recommendations for local public health strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption among adults in Jigawa State.
  2. To evaluate the association between smoking, alcohol consumption, and hypertension in Jigawa State.
  3. To determine the socio-demographic factors influencing the relationship between smoking, alcohol consumption, and hypertension in the region.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption among adults in Jigawa State?
  2. What is the relationship between smoking and alcohol consumption and the prevalence of hypertension in Jigawa State?
  3. How do socio-demographic factors such as age, gender, and occupation influence the impact of smoking and alcohol consumption on hypertension in Jigawa State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant association between smoking and hypertension in Jigawa State.
  2. There is a significant association between alcohol consumption and hypertension in Jigawa State.
  3. Socio-demographic factors such as age, gender, and occupation moderate the relationship between smoking, alcohol consumption, and hypertension in Jigawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will be conducted in Jigawa State, Nigeria, focusing on adults aged 18 years and above. The study will examine the prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as their association with hypertension. The study will be limited by the availability of participants and the accessibility of health records in the state, which may affect the generalizability of the findings to other regions in Nigeria or beyond. Additionally, self-reported data on smoking and alcohol consumption may be subject to biases, such as social desirability bias. The cross-sectional nature of the study will also limit the ability to establish causal relationships.

Definitions of Terms

  • Hypertension: A medical condition characterized by persistently high blood pressure, typically defined as a systolic pressure greater than 130 mm Hg or a diastolic pressure greater than 80 mm Hg (American Heart Association, 2023).
  • Smoking: The act of inhaling and exhaling the smoke of tobacco or other substances (World Health Organization, 2023).
  • Alcohol Consumption: The intake of alcoholic beverages, which is often measured in terms of frequency and quantity consumed (Smith et al., 2024).
